Half Term Halloween Activities at Holkham

Half Term Halloween Activities at Holkham

A GRIMM HALLOWEEN in the Holkham Walled Gardens

Wednesday 28th - Saturday 31st October 2020, 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm.

Once upon a time there lived two brothers, who collected sinister stories and terrifying fairy tales that only the bravest of children dare read; they were The Brothers Grimm. Spend a Grimm inspired Halloween at Holkham, where deep in the enchanted walled garden you’ll find live mini-performances of the age-old tale of Hansel and Gretel, as well as spooky storytelling, pumpkin carving, face painting, witch-crafts and tantalising skele-trails for the whole family to enjoy. For the bravest children, there is an opportunity to get up close and creepy with the crawlies, plus a hair-raising chance to conquer the tree top terrors under the cover of darkness on the ropes course.

Wells next the Sea Christmas Tide

Wells next the Sea Christmas Tide

Saturday 30th November is the all-important entry you need to make because that’s when you need to clear the decks for this year’s Wells Christmas Tide Festival.

The festival is fast becoming one of the hottest events in Norfolk’s Christmas calendar, attracting thousands of visitors to Wells from across East Anglia and further afield.

Once again, the event has been brought slightly forward again this year due to the tides so that our youngest visitors can get to see Santa make his famous arrival in town from the sea.

The festive fun actually starts the day before (Friday 29th November noon – 4pm) with the opening up of the Gordon Barrett Memorial Hall in Clubbs Lane for the traditional Christmas Tree Festival.

Locals and visitors alike will be able to admire the decorated trees from 10am until 4pm on Saturday Nov 30th and 10am to 12noon on Sunday 1st December.

As you would expect, the festival organising committee has lined up another fantastic all-day jamboree of entertainment for the whole family from 10am the following day (Sat).

Craft and gift stalls will commence trading from various locations in the town, including the Quayside, Staithe Street, Wells Health Centre and Staithe Street car parks and The Maltings.

Dave the Scots piper will signify the start of proceedings when he fires up his bagpipes and parades down Staithe Street at 10am.

The town’s main shopping street will then remain the focus of the festive fun as a whole host of acts keep visitors entertained along its length for the remainder of the day.

Acts will include the Norwich Samba Band, Charlie Cheesecake, the Fakenham Town Band, Punch & Judy, the Blakeney Old Wild Rovers, the Fakenham Ukes, Diddy Long Legs, the Bellfolk Handbell Ringers and ThunderMental.

Residents and businesses should note that Staithe Street will be closed to traffic along its entire length from 9am to 8-30pm on the day for reasons of public safety.

In addition to the travelling entertainers a host of other attractions will be available in the town including lantern making, face painting, model balloon making, the chance to ‘meet the penguins’ and an opportunity to make and decorate gingerbread men with Norfolk’s Kate Barmby of ‘Bake-Off’ fame.

The honour of switching on the town’s Christmas lights will once again go to BBC Look East husband and wife presenters David Whiteley and Amelia Reynolds at around 5pm.

Approximately 45 minutes later children and their parents will parade down Staithe Street towards the harbour with the lanterns they made earlier in the day in readiness for Santa’s arrival.

Accompanied children can also take part in the parade by decorating a pull-along cart complete with Christmas-themed characters and lights. Please register your name at Mr C's in Staithe Street no later than 29th November.

It is expected that Santa will arrive on the Quay at around 6.30pm before heading for his grotto at The Maltings, in time to see children from around 7pm onwards.

North Norfolk Railway - the Poppy Line 'Santa Express'

North Norfolk Railway - the Poppy Line 'Santa Express'

This is absolute Christmas Magic - our team at The White House love this special Christmas Steam train - just like stepping in to another era and Santa in his Grotto is wonderful - a real treat

Here is what the Poppy Express has to say about it:

What could be more magical than stepping onto the platform at Sheringham Station, with steam gently rising around the carriages as Santa’s Steam Train patiently waits to take you to see the big man himself?

Toot, toot! And the train is off. Relax in the comfy seats aboard vintage carriages, as festive treats are served at your seat with a warm mince pie and glass of sherry for the grown-ups and a flavoured milk drink and cookie for children.

Why not make a party of it and add one of Santa’s Selection Platters to your table? Each of these platters serve 4 people, are lovingly made on-board Santa’s Train and are made up of freshly made sandwiches, savoury bites, cakes and of course sweet treats!

We now arrive at our destination ready to encounter many of the seasonal wonders that our Santa special has in store.

During your visit to Santa’s Station, wonder around our unique festive walk-through kingdom filled with over 100 Christmas trees, light displays, decorations and much more. You are well on your way to meeting the man in red himself where every child will receive a carefully chosen gift.

Santa has also brought along some special friends this year, so make sure you set some time aside to say hello to his reindeer. If you are on his good list this year you may even have the opportunity to feed them.

Santa’s workshop will also be open for children to take part in festive arts and crafts activities and marvel at the seasonal model railway before boarding the Santa Special for our return journey back to Sheringham.

Henry Moore at Houghton Hall

Henry Moore at Houghton Hall

1st May – 29th September 2019

(WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS, SUNDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAY MONDAYS – 1ST MAY-19TH JULY)(WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS, SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAY MONDAYS ONLY – 20TH JULY ONWARDS)

In a unique collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, Houghton Hall in Norfolk presents this major exhibition HENRY MOORE AT HOUGHTON HALL: NATURE AND INSPIRATION – the first significant show of the artist’s work in East Anglia.

Curated by Sebastiano Barassi, the Henry Moore Foundation’s Head of Collections & Exhibitions, the exhibition will include several monumental outdoor pieces in the grounds of the house, as well as a selection of smaller works, models and etchings, which will be shown in the ground floor gallery spaces. There will also be sculptural interventions in the State Rooms, particularly in The Stone Hall. Highlights include many of Moore’s most celebrated works such as Large Reclining Figure 1984, The Arch 1963-69, Three Piece Sculpture: Vertebrae 1968-69 and Upright Motive No.8 1955-56.

Lord Cholmondeley, owner of Houghton Hall, said: ”It is a great accolade for Houghton to have the Henry Moore Foundation involved in this year’s exhibition. We feel honoured that the Foundation are lending such a range of important work and have agreed to curate the show for us. We are also extremely grateful to our sponsors, particularly the Gagosian Gallery.”

Godfrey Worsdale, Director, Henry Moore Foundation, said: “The Foundation is delighted that Henry Moore’s work will be seen in the remarkable surroundings of Houghton Hall. Over recent years, Houghton has become increasingly recognised for the platform it gives to artists, and in particular to the work of sculptors. Henry Moore was frequently engaged by the relationship of his work with architecture, and always pleased to see his monumental forms in natural light and settings; this exhibition will enable both to be seen to magnificent effect.”

Henry Moore (1898 – 1986) is considered to be one of the most important British artists of the 20th Century and arguably the most internationally celebrated sculptor of the modern era. Moore was a pioneer, and the first British artist to become a global star in his own lifetime. His work came to symbolize post-war modernism and can be said to have caused a British sculptural renaissance. Moore’s sculpture can be seen in innumerable museum collections around the world. He worked in many different mediums, but his most recognizable works are large bronze groups using both figurative and abstract elements. He also produced fibreglass versions of some of his most iconic pieces, specifically for exhibition, and two of these will be on show at Houghton.

Moore left a large body of work to the Foundation, which he set up in the grounds of his house at Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, in 1977. Part of the Foundation’s remit is to make loans and organize exhibitions both in this country and abroad.

Houghton Hall was built by Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, and was designed by the most prominent architects of the early Georgian period, Colen Campbell and James Gibbs; whilst the gilded interiors of the State Floor, with their mythological painted ceilings and profusion of marble and mahogany, was the work of William Kent. Sir Robert’s great picture collection was sold to the Empress Catherine of Russia in 1779, but the furniture, bronzes and Roman antiquities were left intact, as well as the family portraits, and the original silks and velvets have survived in remarkable condition. Houghton and its estate passed to the Cholmondeley family at the end of the 18th Century and is still a family home. The house and award-winning gardens have been open to the public since 1976.

In 2013 a remarkable exhibition reunited the house with Walpole’s original picture collection, with loans from the State Hermitage St Petersburg and many other museums and collections. The show won Apollo Magazine’s Exhibition of the Year and Hudson’s Heritage Best Event and attracted 120,000 visitors.
