The festival extends to art exhibitions and talks by distinguished speakers as diverse as IVF Pioneer Professor Robert Winston discussing the history of fertility issues, genetic modification and the way reproduction may now be manipulated.and Dr Matthew Bothwell from the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, who with composer Tim Watts will discuss the link between music and astronomy. Followed by the world premiere of The Creation of the Universe, a new work by Tim Watts for a narrator and ensemble telling the story of the Big Bang.

The festival is a fantastic event, bringing to Kings Lynn a huge array of talent, creativity and culture.

Holt Festival - 21-27 July 2019

Holt Festival - 21-27 July 2019

The Holt Festival is great fun, with music, conversation, dance, fine art, children's entertainment and a fringe festival.

Holt is a place where butchers, fishmongers and green grocers still thrive and galleries, cafés, restaurants and interesting, independent shops are plentiful.

In the summer months Holt is a magnet for visitors to the North Norfolk Coast and all year round residents of the surrounding brick and flint hamlets and villages, gather here. Christmas shopping in Holt is famous too. But excitingly, during festival week, briefly and dazzlingly, it is home to musicians, poets, actors, dancers, artists and comedians.

There are venues all over town including performances at the wonderful church, the Auden Theatre at Gresham’s School, in the local independent Holt Bookshop, the Holt Community Centre, local hotels and in the really special, rather magical, Open-Air Theatre in the Woods also at Gresham’s School.

If you’re looking for cultural nourishment, belly laughs and the pleasure of seeing top-flight internationally recognised performers, have a look and book in for some of this year’s events.

The Norfolk Superhero - Team Challenge Quadrathalon, June 16 2018

The Norfolk Superhero - Team Challenge Quadrathalon, June 16 2018

What is the Norfolk Superhero?

The Norfolk Superhero is a quadrathlon event held annually in June when the tides are right, at Burnham Overy Staithe on the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

Participants take part in teams of 2 over a course that includes a 1 mile swim, a 4 mile kayak through the creeks, a 45 mile circular cycle route and an 8 mile run across the beach finishing with the last mile over the marsh. Teams must stick together and help each other out although there is a good mix of competition on show as well.

One of the key trademarks of the Norfolk Superhero Challenge is the 'buddy system'. People take part in teams of 2, working together as a unit so they are able to monitor and help each other and share the success of completing the challenge with another person

Named after the village’s Hero Pub, the event has, over the years, grown from a small band of friends to a maximum of 200 competitors, all of whom raise money to support a Norfolk based charity every year.

David Atkins Exhibition at the Fairfax Gallery in Burnham Market from 26 May, 2018

David Atkins Exhibition at the Fairfax Gallery in Burnham Market from 26 May, 2018

DAVID ATKINS

David Atkins Artist information:

The Fairfax Gallery have been privileged to work with David Atkins exhibiting his paintings since our opening Exhibition in 1995, closely following his success with critics and collectors alike over the years. David’s confident painterly use of oils marks him out as an artist with a future as vibrant as his paintings.

David Atkins has selected a hand finished contemporary white frame to offset the compositions. The beauty of the original paintings is the rich textural qualities of the oil, which tends to look flat in reproductions.

St Martins School of Art Winchester  – First Class Honours in Fine Art

Winner of the 2000 Discerning Eye – ‘ Facade International Prize ‘
Also a finalist in the 2001 & 2002 Discerning Eye awards, held at the Mall Galleries, London & 2003 NEAC exhibition at Mall Galleries, London.
David Atkins’ Paintings are produced with vigour and intuitiveness, allowing the process of working and reworking to consolidate the truthful response of the subject.

Assurance: Our prices are set by the artists and we wish to ensure  you the best price possible. If you see work by the artist from any source at a lower price please let us know as we do not knowing wish to be undersold

Chamber Music in the Marble Hall at Holkham - Daniel Kharitonov - Piano Saturday 28th April - 7pm

Chamber Music in the Marble Hall at Holkham - Daniel Kharitonov - Piano Saturday 28th April - 7pm

This concert is one of a series of chamber music concerts at Holkham Hall - absolute magic.

Daniel Kharitonov - Piano
Saturday 28th April - 7pm

Programme:
Mozart: Fantasie No.3 in D minor K.397
Beethoven: Sonata in C sharp minor Op.27 No.2 ‘Moonlight’
Beethoven: Sonata in F minor Op.57 ‘Appassionata’
Tchaikovsky: Pletnev: Concert Suite from ‘The Nutcracker’
Tchaikovsky: Dumka Op.59 (Scene from a Russian village)
Rachmaninov: Sonata No.2 Op.36

Daniel Kharitonov was born in 1998 in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the island of Sakhalin, over 4,000 miles from Moscow. He studied at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory and came to the Royal College of Music in 2016.

In 2015 he was the youngest ever competitor in the 15th Tchaikovsky International Competition where he took third prize, a staggering achievement for one so young in a competition at this level. Daniel made his début at the Royal Festival Hall in November 2017 in a concert with the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra. He also appeared with the London Chamber Orchestra in Ghent, gave an extensive recital tour in Japan, was a soloist in Bratislava with the Slovak Philharmonic and played at the Windsor Festival and in Cambridge.

This is Daniel’s first visit to north Norfolk and his generous programme combines standard classics with works from his mother country’s rich musical heritage. We eagerly anticipate this brilliant young pianist’s début at Holkham.

Tickets: £25 - Includes a glass of wine in the Saloon during the interval and an opportunity to view some of the other state rooms in the Hall.

TREASURES AND TROPHIES – THE MAKING OF A GENTLEMAN AND A GREAT HOUSE

TREASURES AND TROPHIES – THE MAKING OF A GENTLEMAN AND A GREAT HOUSE

Thomas Coke is, of course, a well known historical figure. Innovative, entrepreneurial and a powerful man politically. Get to know him better through this exhibition of his life through the art he chose and loved. The Hokham Hall exhibitions are beautifully curated and well worth the trip.

Thomas Coke, creator of Holkham Hall, was, in 1712, an impressionable teenager tempted by gambling and cock fighting. Under the instruction of his guardians he was sent on one of the longest and most influential Grand Tours of the 18th century. The Grand Tour was the precursor to today’s package travel and allowed young aristocrats the chance to experience the arts, culture, society and history of parts of Europe.Over the course of six years he travelled through France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the Low Countries.

Leaving to gunfire and fanfare from Holkham, Thomas undertook a journey which inspired him to create the house you see today. Delve into the archives and witness the arduous route he travelled, meet the entourage who accompanied him, discover how the people he met, such as William Kent, became a lifelong friends and helped shape his vision, learn about the epic collection of paintings, statues, drawings, rare books and manuscripts he amassed which now attract a worldwide audience and form his ‘temple of the arts’. Undertaking lessons in horse riding, fencing and music, Thomas Coke had language tutors who encouraged him to fully immerse himself in the culture of his surroundings, he pursued his interest in architecture and witnessed grand operas, theatre and balls of the period, turning an impressionable adolescent into a true virtuoso and architect in the making. In 1734 work began on his temple of the arts, and in 1744 became 1st Earl of Leicester of the first creation.

To bring the story and history to life there will be plenty of opportunity for visitor interaction. Adults and children can walk in the shoes of Thomas Coke, dressing up in costume, create a mini Palladian building from blocks, witness the food he ate and discover a replica studio of the Italian painter, Francesco Trevisani, where Thomas Coke, aged 20, sat for his portrait, which now hangs in the Manuscript Library of the hall.

Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays from 25th March to 31st October 2018

Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall: Colour Space Paintings and Outdoor Sculptures

Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall: Colour Space Paintings and Outdoor Sculptures

This Damien Hirst installation at Houghton Hall, opening on 25th March and on until 25th July, is already generating a huge buzz both nationally and here in West Norfolk. It promises to be a very exciting exhibition.

A new series of paintings, Colour Space, will be installed in the State Rooms at Houghton Hall for the exhibition ‘Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall’ from 25 March – 15 July 2018. The exhibition will include a number of the artist’s most celebrated sculptures, which will be installed throughout the 18th-century house and gardens.

The Colour Space series is a development of the iconic Spot Paintings which are among the artist's most recognised works. Where the Spot Paintings of the 1980s and 90s use the logic of mechanical paint application, the Colour Space paintings are looser and more organic in appearance. Six sculptures will be installed outdoors, including ‘Virgin Mother’ (2005–2006) and ‘Charity’ (2002–2003). Three sculptures will be installed in the house: ‘Saint Bartholomew’, ‘Exquisite Pain’ (2006) in the Entrance Hall, and two smaller kinetic sculptures from the artist’s “levitation” series – featuring air blowers and table tennis balls – in the celebrated Stone Hall.

Damien Hirst said: “I originally wanted the Spots to look like they were painted by a human trying to paint like a machine. Colour Space is going back to the human element, so instead you have the fallibility of the human hand in the drips and inconsistencies. There are still no two exact colours that repeat in each painting, which is really important to me. I think of them as cells under a microscope. It felt right to show them somewhere historic rather than in a conventional gallery space and Houghton’s perfect. It feels totally right.”

The exhibition will coincide with the publication of Colour Space, published by HENI Publishing.

Norfolk by Design Pop up at Houghton Hall

Norfolk by Design Pop up at Houghton Hall

Hosted at Fabulous Houghton Hall, this Norfolk by Design exhibition promises to be inspirational. We love and respect the work of the artists involved and are delighted to have Norfolk by Design who discover and curate the wonderful work for this showcase.

For the second Norfolk by Design Pop-Up Shop we will have a selection of new work by 40+ of Norfolk’s finest artists and craftspeople from across the generations. This will coincide with the opening of the Damien Hirst exhibition at Houghton Hall from March 25 to July 15, 2018.
The focus this year will be on artists of differing generations with a few more mature artists from Norfolk and the wider reaches of East Anglia, including a capsule collection of work by the late Margaret Mellis. She concluded a productive artistic career based in Suffolk, where she brought order to chaos in her playful assemblages. Before her death in 2009, Damien Hirst, an early admirer of her work remarked in 2001, “Why hasn’t someone noticed Margaret Mellis’ contribution to British art?” On this evidence it is time the British art establishment addressed his challenge.
All exhibitors share a simplicity of form and intent that belies the complexity often involved in making a piece of sculpture, a painting, a photograph, a turned wooden bowl or a slate dish. As many of us have lost the knowledge it takes to actually make something of worth, these artists have opted to make their thinking and production process apparent. In their hands, highly skilled activities with hard to handle materials like seashells, porcelain, seaweed, stone or smoke seem simple to fashion into something beautiful. This simplicity is of course, deceptive. Much of what will be displayed in The Stables is labour intensive, requires a good deal of dexterity during its production and while reflecting a simpler aesthetic and straightforward approach, is in fact anything but. Some, like Margaret Mellis will be shown for the first time here, others who were with us last year, will be showing new work.

DATES AND OPENING TIMES
The exhibition will be held at Houghton Hall Stables. Follow the brown signs off the A148 Fakenham to King’s Lynn Road PE31 6TY. Public opening times will be from 11am to 5.00pm Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays (including Bank Holiday Mondays) from 25 March to 31 July. The venue has been provided by kind permission of the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley.
